3. Lower the printerís output tray and open the cover.
4. Press the power button to turn on the printer. The
power light flashes and the black and color inkout lights come on. The ink cartridge holders moveinto loading position.
Caution:Always use the power button to turn theprinter on or off. Never use an externalswitch, such as a power strip switch.
5. Lift up the two ink cartridge clamps.
6. Place the ink cartridges in their holders with the labelsfacing up and toward the back of the printer. Thenpress down the clamps until they lock into place.
WARNING:If ink gets on your hands, wash themthoroughly with soap and water. If ink gets inyour eyes, flush them immediately with water.
2 Put on the Paper Support
Insert the paper support into the slots at the back of theprinterís sheet feeder.
3 Install the Ink Cartridges
1. Plug the printerís power cord into a grounded outlet.
Caution:Donít use an outlet that can be turned off bya wall switch or timer, or one on the samecircuit as a large appliance. This may disruptthe power, which can erase the printerísmemory or damage its power supply.
2. Remove the ink cartridges from their packages. Thenremove only the yellow part of the tape seal on top,as shown. Donít pull off the blue portion or removethe clear seal on the bottom of the cartridge.
Caution:Use the ink cartridges packed with yourprinter the first time you install them or yourprinter wonít charge ink properly. You mustremove the yellow tape seal from thecartridge or you will permanently damage it.
Donít try to remove the clear seal from thebottom of the cartridge; ink will leak out.
7. Press the cleaning button to begin charging theink delivery system and close the printer cover.
Charging takes about a minute. The power lightflashes and the printer makes various sounds untilitís finished. Donít turn off the printer or interruptthe charging process or it will start over, using moreink than necessary. Charging is finished when the
power light stops flashing and stays on.
Caution:Never turn off the printer while the powerlight is flashing, unless the printer hasnítmoved or made any noise for more than
5 minutes.
4 Load Paper
1. Open the output tray extensions. Slide the left edgeguide right until it is a little wider than your paper.
2. Load a stack of plain paper with the printable side upand place it against the right edge guide. Then slidethe left edge guide up against the paperís left edge.
Donít load paper higher than the arrow on the guide.

Connecting to a PC Parallel Port
1. T urn off the printer and computer.
2. Connect the parallel cable to the printerís parallelconnector, then fasten it with the wire clips.
3. Connect the other end of the cable to yourcomputerís main parallel connector (LPT1) andsecure it as necessary.
Note:The printer software automatically assignsthe printer to the LPT1 port. To use adifferent LPT port, see your Windows
documentation for instructions.
Connecting to a PC USB Port (Windows 98 only)
1. T urn off the printer and computer.
2. Connect one end of the USB cable to your printerís
USB connector and the other end to your computerís
USB connector.
Caution:If youíre using a USB hub, connect theprinterís cable to the first tier of the hub orthe printer may malfunction. If the printerdoesnít work with the hub, connect itdirectly to the USB port.

1. Make sure your printer and computer are connectedand turned off.
2. Turn on your computer and wait until you see theicons on your Windows or Macintosh desktop.
3. Turn on your printer and wait until the power lightstops flashing.
IMPORTANT:If at any time you see a screen telling you that Windowshas detected your printer and asking you to install a driverdiskette, ALWAYS select Cancel. You canít install yoursoftware that way.
4. Insert your printer software CD-ROM.
5. With Windows, click Start, select Run, and type
D:\EPSON (where D is your CD-ROM drive letter).
Then click OK.
On a Macintosh, double-click the EPSON icon in the
EPSON CD-ROM folder.
6. After a moment, the EPSON Stylus COLOR 740 Installerstarts. Read the license agreement and click Agree.
7. Follow the on-screen instructions to install your printerdriver. With Windows, you also install Status Monitor 2.
When you restart your system after installing theprinter software, leave your CD-ROM in the drive.

8. To install a program or your electronic EPSON Stylus
COLOR 740 Manual, just click the button for yourselection on the Main Menu. Then follow theon-screen instructions. Click EXIT when youíre done.
Note:To view your electronic manual, you must install
Adobe Acrobat

Reader and QuickTime

on your system, if you donít alreadyhave them. With Windows, the installerautomatically installs the programs for you. On a
Macintosh, select the options to install theprograms and follow the on-screen instructions.
Once youíve viewed the manual, you can copy itto your hard disk using the Copy Printer Manualto Hard Drive option.
9. Some of the software you install may restartyour system. If you restart but want to install moresoftware, do the following:Windows: Click Start, point to Programs, Epson,and select EPSON Stylus COLOR 740 Installer.
Macintosh: Double-click the EPSON icon in the
CD-ROM folder.
10. After you finish installing Windows software, youíreready to print a color image! See step 3, Print animage to get started.
On a Macintosh, you need to select your printer inthe Chooser. Go to step 11.
11. Open the Chooser. If youíre connected to the
Macintosh printer port or to a PowerBook with oneport, turn off AppleTalk

.
12. Click the SC 740 icon, then click the icon for theport youíre using. T urn on background printing, ifyou want to use it. Then close the Chooser.
13. Now youíre ready to print a color image! See step 3,
Print an image, to get started.
Windows 3.1
1. Make sure your printer and computer are connectedand turned off.
2. Turn on your printer and wait until the power lightstops flashing.
3. Turn on your computer and make sure Program
Manager is running.
4. Insert your printer software CD-ROM.

Now that youíve set up your printer and installed thesoftware, youíre ready to print in any application.
If you installed Adobe PhotoDeluxe from the
CD-ROM, you can use the Guided Printing Exercisefor a quick lesson in printing (not available with
Windows 3.1 or Macintosh). Click Start, point to
Programs, Adobe, PhotoDeluxe 2.0, and then click
Run Guided Printing Exercise. For details, see your
Printer Basics book.
When you finish the exercise, this color image is printedon the Photo Quality Ink Jet Paper in your EPSONmedia pack:Printer Basics also gives step-by-step printinginstructions for both Windows and Macintoshapplications, basic printer maintenance andtroubleshooting information, and instructions onviewing electronic manuals with Adobe Acrobat Reader.
