3. Driver Installation Notes
==========================================================================
First time installation:
Insert the EPSON printer software CD in your CD-ROM drive. Click the Start button
and select RUN. Type in the appropriate driver letter that identifies your CD ROM drive.
Click Browse and select the SETUP.EXE file and press Enter. Select the EPSON printer
driver then click OK.

Removing driver:
When you're reinstalling the printer driver or installing a printer driver for a second
port, make sure to do the following:

* Check that all print jobs have finished printing before you begin installation.
* Close all applications
* Run the "EPSON Printer Utility Uninstall" program by the following steps:
- Click on "Start"
- Click on "Settings"
- Select "Control Panel"
- Double click the "Add/Remove Programs" icon
- Select the "EPSON Printer Software" from the list and click
"Add/Remove..."
4. Using EPSON Printer Port
==========================================================================
* Using EPSON Printer Port for increased speed
To use EPSON Printer Port for increased speed, change the parallel port setting to ECP
using your computer's BIOS Setup program.
To learn how to change the BIOS settings, refer to your PC manual.

* Viewing the EPSON Printer Port setting dialog
To view the EPSON Printer Port setting dialog box, double-click [My Computer],
double-click [Printer], select your printer icon, and select [File]-[Properties].
In the printer driver window, click the [Port] tab, click the appropriate port tab ([LPTx]),
then click the [Port Configuration] button.

* Uninstalling EPSON Printer Port
To uninstall EPSON Printer Port, double-click "EPSON Printer Port Uninstall" in the

Note: Uninstalling the printer driver will not uninstall EPSON Printer Port.

* Using EPSON Printer Port with scanner
If your printer is connected to your computer through your scanner's parallel port, do
not attempt to import a scanned image while printing, as the printer may not complete
printing successfully.

* For DELL Xpi series PC users
If you are using a DELL Xpi series PC, you may have problems printing data or using
the EPSON Status Monitor 3 utilities. In this case, change the ECP setting to OFF using
your computer's BIOS settings, or uninstall EPSON Printer Port.

1. Introduction
Before calling technical support, be sure to read this README file, which includes solutions to printer driver and application-specific problems.

2. Important legal information
3. Install notes
When you're reinstalling the printer driver after deleting it, installing a printer driver for a second port, or installing the driver using plug and play, make sure to do the following
check that all print jobs have finished printing before you begin installation
close all applications
select "Replace existing driver" if prompted by the installation program.

4. Q & A regarding printing

Q: I can't seem to print correctly using the "Proportional Printing" or "Print Layout" options. Why?
A: Try setting print properties from the application's Print dialog box before printing; or setting print properties from control panel, then restart your application.
For example, to print from Microsoft Word 7.0 or Word 97 do the following:
1) From the File menu, select Print.
2) Click Properties.
3) Select the Paper menu.
4) Set the desired paper size.
5) Select the Layout menu.
6) For Proportional Printing, select Fit to Page, then select the desired paper size. After clicking OK, the Properties dialog box closes and the Print dialog box displays again.
7) Make any other selections in the Print dialog box, and click OK.

Q: I want to print a document using Proportional Printing but I am using more than one page size in the document. What should I do?
A: You can either divide the document into sections, each of which uses a single page size, or do the following:
1) Select File / Print / Properties or Setup
2) Select the Paper menu.
3) Select the paper size that corresponds to the largest paper size used in your document.
4) Select the Layout menu.
5) Select "Fit to Page", then select the paper size which you have loaded in the printer.
6) Select "Custom". All pages in your document are scaled to the largest page.

Q: After I changed print settings, the print output is not what I expected. Paragraph positioning is off, and text or graphics are missing. Why?
A: This problem can occur when settings for Print Quality, Proportional Printing or Print Layout have changed since the document was created. Try adjusting margins and font sizes. If your application has a print preview feature, use it before printing.

Q: When I print multiple copies of a document using the Print Layout feature, the same page prints twice. What do I do?
A: Make sure the copy count on the application's print menu to 1, and set the copy count on the printer driver's Paper menu.

Q: Thin lines don't print, or the print quality is poor. How can I correct them?
A: Use the Head Cleaning utility located on the Utility menu to verify that all the nozzles on the print head are firing. If this does not correct the problem, increase the thickness of the lines and try printing again.

Q: When I change the printer's name, the color of the print output changes slightly. Also, I get different results when I change printers.
A: Use the Printer and Option Information utility located on the Utility menu. (You should not need to do this if the printer's bi-directional communication is working.) Click on Settings Sheet and enter the numbers that print information in the Printer ID area. If "Settings Sheet" is grayed out, Epson Status Monitor 3 is running and the system enters the information automatically.
Q: When I install an EPSON Stylus High Quality ESC/P 2 printer driver and the Microsoft Windows Printing System at the same time, both printers stop working correctly.
A: For the printer you aren't going to be using, on the Details menu, set the "Print to the following port" to "FILE:" and try printing again.

Q: Upon changing the Paper Source, the Paper Size can not be set properly.
A: Please open the printer driver from the control panel and change the settings. Then restart your application.
For example, to select "Roll Paper", carry out the following steps:
1) Double click on the Printer Icon in the Control Panel folder.
2) Right click on the desired printer, and select "Properties".
3) Select the Paper menu.
4) Select "Roll Paper" from the Paper Source list.
5) Click on "OK". This will close the printer driver window.
6) Restart the application you wish to use.

The following method can be used so that it is not necessary to always change the settings in the control panel:

1) Re-Install the same printer as the one you wish to use. This will create a "(Copy - 2)" of the printer driver.
2) Set the Paper Source on the first driver to "Cut Sheet". (Using the method above)
3) Set the Paper Source on the (Copy - 2) driver to "Roll Sheet".
4) From the application select the printer driver which has the Paper Source

B. Late-breaking news regarding your Windows NT printer driver
==============================================================
I. Tips
-------
* Increasing the printing speed
If MicroWeave is selected, black ink printing is much slower than
usual.
(Color printing speed is only slightly affected by MicroWeave).
Turn off MicroWeave to increase print speed.
If you are printing in black ink, select MicroWeave only for
presentation quality printing.

Other ways to speed up your printing include turning on High Speed
mode, turning off Halftoning, printing in black ink instead of
color, and printing at a lower resolution.

Your CPU speed, amount of system memory, application type,
document type, and degree of hard disk fragmentation also
significantly affect printing speed.

* EGA and CGA displays
The driver does not function properly with EGA and CGA displays.
Either use the standard Windows driver (available from Microsoft)
or upgrade your monitor to VGA.

* Changing printer resolution.
Settings that are changed in the printer driver override the
settings made in your application software. For example, when the
Print Quality is set to Fine-720 dpi with Plain paper selected as
the Media Type, your documents are printed at Fine-720 dpi even
though the resolution in your application software is set to
another resolution.

* Using the Propotional printing
When you change the printing size by the Propotional printing item,
sometimes the edges of your document are not printed.
Make sure to place enough spaces to the edges of your document
when you use the Propotional printing.

* Make sure to use SETUP.EXE for installing. The System Installer
(Add Printer) sometimes fails to replace older versions of the
driver files with the new version.
When connecting a network printer connect the printer to a local
port first (at installation time) and then change the connection
to the network afterwards.

* Using utilities in the network environment.
Sometimes the utilities (Nozzle Check, Head Cleaning, and Print
Head Alignment) will not work in a network environment.
If this is the case, please connect the printer to a local port
to use the utilities.

Before calling technical support, be sure to read this README file, which includes
solutions to printer driver and application-specific problems.

2. Important legal information

3. Driver Installation Notes
==========================================================================

* Close all applications
* Run the "EPSON Printer Utility Uninstall" program by the following steps:
- Click on "Start"
- Click on "Settings"
- Select "Control Panel"

Note:
If you are unable to close the "Add/Remove Programs" window by clicking
"Close" , click the Close [X] button at the upper right corner of the window.
This problem does not effect the printer driver uninstallation.

4. Q & A
==========================================================================
Q: The error message "Insufficient memory to print. Please consult the 'ReadMe' file
for more information." is displayed, printing cannot be carried out. Why?
A: There is insufficient memory for printing. To resolve this problem try the following:
* Expand the installed Memory
* Expand the size of the Virtual Memory
For details on this method please consult the Windows Help page
titled "To change the size of the virtual memory paging file"

Q: The error message "Insufficient disk space to print. Please consult the 'ReadMe' file
for more information." is displayed, printing cannot be carried out. Why?
A: There is insufficient free hard disk space to carry out the print job.
To resolve this problem try the following:
* Expand the amount of free space on your Hard Disk

Q: The error message "A Fatal Error has occurred. Unable to print. Please consult the
'ReadMe' file for more information." is displayed, printing cannot be carried out.
Why?
A: The printer driver is not installed correctly. As per the instructions listed in Section 3
(Driver Installation Notes) of this readme, please re-install the printer driver.

Q: Cannot print. There is no error message displayed.
A: If you print a document with image data, like Tiff file, after specifying the resolution
of either 1440dpi or 720dpi where "Finest Detail" has been selected in the driver
settings, some Drawing software creates a large quantity of interim print data.
To print with software like this, a large quantity of both Virtual Memory and free HD
space is necessary.
Without enough Virtual Memory and free HD space, the software can't allocate the
required Memory and may possibly lose the print data during spooling and/or greatly
slow down the print job.
